Early Tuesday, Messi was a near-unanimous pick to win the Golden Ball, or Ballon d'Or for you traditionalists.

Out of 480 possible points, the Argentine wonder got 473.

After the triple-trophy winning season Barca had in 2008-09, it was all but locked up months ago. He's the sixth Barca dude to win and first since Ronaldinho four years ago. Here's the victory speech:
"For me it's a big honour to win - but also to become the first Argentinian in history to receive the trophy. I dedicate it to my family, they were always present when I needed them and sometimes felt even stronger emotions than me.''
Cristiano Ronaldo was second, followed by Xavi and Iniesta. Who's gonna win it next year...?
