Lazy Friday: Video 6

It's Lazy Friday. I didn't get a lot of sleep last night, so I'm mailing it in today with some videos and links throughout the day.

You think field players are the only ones that can hit it upper 90? This video from Off the Post suggests otherwise.

That looked more like luck than skill, but it worked...

Final couple links of the day:

This next clip comes from 101 Great Goals, where some casual looking dude crushed a 40-yard strike into the upper 90.

If I ever scored a goal like that, I would strip naked, climb into the stands to steal a beer, scream "Freedom!" at the top of my lungs William Wallace-style and then run out of the stadium -- leaving my team to finish the game a man down.

Here's the Beckham related news o' the day:

Here's a fun video of a situation only soccer can provide. This comes courtesy of Off the Post, where we see a dude prepare to take a corner kick amid a rainstorm of projectiles from the crowd.

So, in frustration, the dudes snaps and chucks some of the debris back.

Red card.

Complaining.

Drama.

Sevilla was down 4-2 aggregate before sealing the comeback with a 90th minute equalizer by Squillaci, which saw them through on the away goals rule.

Barcelona advanced past Espanyol in the other semifinal.

Here's an ad I'd never seen. I had to watch it a couple times and listen closely to finally get it.

Good times.

Powerful pictures

Great picture finds by The Original Winger. Definitely worth the trip.

More on Gallardo

Goff had a hunch the other day, so he started digging. Turns out, Gallardo is super close to signing with big club River Plate and is desperate to get out of D.C. according to his sources.

The Soccer Insider's other possibility was the return of Christian Gomez -- which is also looking like something both sides could like.

More evidence to the River Plate destination comes from MLSR -- which has a video of him over there.
Just got an email from a friend in Buenos Aires... Gallardo is about to sign with River Plate!!!. They are doing the physical exam right now and he will be signing in the next 24 hours...
Sounds like a good fit.

Rio gallery

The Guardian folk were brutal with the United defender, particularly with his new magazine.

Looks like he has some competition too...

VIDEO: Dude forearm shivers a goal

Cheater. This in a Scottish Cup match not too long ago.

The video never makes it look too blatant -- hence the non-call probably -- but this picture is pretty damning.

Bryan Prunty, you suck.

Gio Dos Santos? 'Bout to be dumped

As we lead up to U.S.A./Mexico, it's time to poke some fun. Like how Marquez and Guardado are hurt.

And loser Sven is their coach.

And, oh yeah, young prodigy Giovani Dos Santos has been a bust and Tottenham is looking to dump him ASAP.

Voodoo campaign canceled

Too bad. I would have loved to see what the Mexican came up with after this bizarre stunt failed.

Radio Shack, a Fort Worth, Texas-based company, apparently pulled out of the deal to provide the dolls.

Not like all Mexican soccer fans don't already have a Landon Donovan voodoo doll, right...?

The company capped withdrawal by wishing "the best of luck" to Mexico. Boooooo!!! See if I ever go to Radio Shack again.

Word is the game sold out in 90 minutes. Dang...

Bobby Convey now a hot commodity

Two California clubs are apparently set to battle for the young winger according to SBI.

Ives thinks it might come down to allocation order, where S.J. is No. 1 and L.A. is No. 2.

I think it'd be nice to see a young, accomplished USMNT talent come back to the league.

Though the soccer expert also cleverly introduces the idea of DaMarcus Beasley coming back -- which might be worth saving that allocation spot for.

VIDEO: Team performs bold protest

A lower level club in Spain has been unable to pay its players due to the economic crisis.

So take a look at what the squad did for the opening moments of a recent game.
The Andalusian players wore simple and direct T-shirts making their case clear to their club President: “Paco Sanz - we want to be paid.” And then the players demonstrated the strength of their beliefs in an unbelievable protest at kick off of the match, as all eleven starters sunk to the floor on the referee’s whistle, refusing to take part in the match for the opening 30 seconds.

Sadly, Granada President Paco Sanz was nowhere to be seen.
Dang, takes cojones.

Michael Owen hurt again

Man this is sad. 19 minutes in. He's out six weeks with a cracked bone in his ankle. Brutal.

Joey Barton's out 10 weeks with an injury too, but who cares about him...?

EPL back v2.0

1. Salomon Kalou nets both goals for Chelsea in a 2-0 win, which drew even with Liverpool on points, but passed the Reds on goal differential.

2. Liverpool will stay in the rear-view mirrors for United and Chelsea, especially after having a particularly poor performance against Wigan. Yossi B. had a great tight-angle goal, but a stupid penalty gave Mido an equalizing PK.

3. Arsenal also continued its struggles. Only a last-gasp wonder strike by RVP gave the Gunners a point against Everton. Aston Villa has really become the 4th of the Big Four this season.

4. Hold the presses. Craig Bellamy scored a quality strike in his Man City debut. Huh.

[By the way, there were a lot of quality goals yesterday around the world. Go explore at 101GG for a while and enjoy!]

VIDEO: Beckham bends in great goal

The angle was tight, but the strike was vicious.

Oh yeah, he also got hurt. It's some abductor injury, but who knows how Beckham's health could affect the impending transfer saga.

Have to think the goal ups his value, but the injury lowers it a bit.

Nice save

Keepers don't get a lot of love. So here's some kudos to Venezuela goalkeeper Rafael Romo for a championship clinching penalty save to win the U-20 South American football Championships over Columbia.

You're kinda off your line, cheater.

Mexicans try voodoo against USMNT

This has to be the best rivalry out there.

You know it's good when voodoo is involved.

An advertise in a newspaper is calling fans to action. Voodoo likenesses of USMNT players will be available at their local Radio Shacks and the Mexican are hoping some supernatural help with bring a rare win on American soil.
“Help end the losing streak so Mexico advances,” the ad read.

An illustration showed a pair of scissors slicing off the leg of a doll in a U.S. jersey that was bruised, crying out in pain, leaking stuffing and stuck with pushpins.
You still haven't won here in 10 years suckas. Good luck with your dolls.

Landon makes Bundesliga debut

He came on midway through the second half for Bayern as league play started back up again.

His team was up 5-0 at the time.

By the way, rumor is the league will ask for $10 million for Donovan if Bayern wants to sign him.

Nice slide dude.

Fabio Capello lapdance on TV

Apparently this is what happens on Milan television shows. Who knew?

And who knew Capello would be up for this? I figured he was off adding toothpaste and Hot Pockets his banned list of substances for the English national team.

More Sounders news and notes

Everyday seems to have tons of news from the fledgling MLS club.

First off, the club signed Cuban defector and decorated midfielder Osvaldo Alonso. He was league rookie of the year and all-league first team for the Charleston Battery of USL-1 and has had plenty of national team experience.

Other news: Peter Vagenas is having arthroscopic knee surgery. Not fun seeing all the veterans getting work done.

Also, here's a preseason schedule (times Pacific).

EPL back after a little break

1. Edwin van der Sar set a league record for minutes without allowing a goal -- his 11th straight clean sheet.

Petr Cech had the previous scoreless minutes record -- as well as the previous consecutive clean sheet record, with 10 -- at 1025 minutes. The Dutchman has now gone 1032.

2. Emile Heskey had the perfect debut for Aston Villa, netting the game-winner in a win that pushed Villa up to 3rd in the EPL for the day.

3. Harry's team finally got a Premiership win. It had been seven games since a December 8th win against West Ham

VIDEO: "Nice goal, here's a punch to the groin"

Mario Gomez pulled a goal back in a 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich.

After his goal, his teammate tried to make him the Bayern eunuch.

Ouch.

Corinthians now concerned over Ronaldo

The other day we posted a story about Ronaldo partying early into the morning.

His Brazilian club seemed to shrug it off and first, but now it's looking like there's some concern over their new, high-priced forward.
"I have some concerns, although I respect the personal life of each professional,'' [Coach] Mano Menezes told Globo TV on Monday. "He knows that with the repercussion of things these days, this will be hurting his image a bit, even causing some problems to us because we will have to give explanations.''
And, of course, we're still waiting for a debut...

Beckham soap opera continues

With all the tug o' war drama between AC Milan and the LA Galaxy over David Beckham, you might never have known the superstar has been sued for alleged crimes against some paparazzi dude.

But yeah, another day, another wrinkle in the miniseries drama. Now it's looking like the Italian club is exploring options to buyout Beckham's contract.

Surprising, according to this story, MLS will listen and review the offers.

Oh, and Fabio Capello is reportedly impressed with Beckham's play. Which was probably the main reason for going to Europe is the first place, right...?

Robinho charged with sexual assault

Never good to be arrested under the suspicion of raping a teenager in a night club.

The Brazilian has denied all allegations against him and says he will fully cooperate. The accuser is a first-year college student -- and reports are that she didn't file a complaint until the afternoon after the alleged attack.

Should be interesting to see if this case has any legs...

Sex scandals aren't good for MLS expansion hopes

Portland, if you don't get an MLS expansion franchise this go-around, blame your mayor Sam Adams.

Sex scandals with teenagers aren't going to help. This via The Oregonian:
Because in the wake of the fallout surrounding the news that Portland's mayor lied about having a sexual relationship with a teenager, a source inside the Major League Soccer offices told me this week that the professional league is asking a lot of pointed questions of the hopeful local ownership group.

Remember, Portland is a finalist for an MLS expansion franchise and Adams was a big supporter of the effort, promising, "I will do everything within my power to bring MLS to this city."
He is, in fact, a member of the Timbers Army.

Come on Soccer City USA...

French paper accuses Fowler of drug smuggling

Not very nice. And not very accurate.

The French publication L'Equipe referenced a spoof website accurately named The Spoof -- think The Onion, you American folk -- and accused former Liverpool star Robbie Fowler of trying to smuggle $100,000 worth of cocaine from Brazil.

Inside soccer balls, no less.

Man, the Internet age is really killing journalistic integrity. Not saying this blog has any -- it really doesn't -- but shouldn't the pros not make mistakes like these?

Yeesh.

[The Fiver via Off the Post]

Cristiano wanted to meet Tiger most

The red. The fist pump. The millions. The swoosh.

The two appear to have quite a bit in common.

In fact, Ronaldo called Tiger the star he most wanted to meet, but sadly the winger was too embarrassed with his golf game to pursue it.

Too bad. It could be a money ad campaign.........

Ronaldo parties, Corinthians shrugs

The Brazilian was out clubbing til 6 a.m.

Hopefully he was dancing more than drinking. Burning calories more than gathering.

Coach Mano Menezes didn't have a problem with it either:
"Ronaldo is respecting the work program well and at that time he was free to do what he wanted," Menezes said.
I have a feeling partying until the early hours of the morning will only delay his debut further.

Mikel Obi caught drunk driving

Not smart. Not cool.

Everyone at Milan loves Beckham

Maybe a little too much...?

No surprise Ancelotti wants him to stay.

Sounders FC news and notes

First off, the team has acquired Patrick Ianni -- a junior national team player -- for a conditional draft pick from Houston. If he plays a lot, it's a 2nd round pick, otherwise it's a third. (Does this mean goodbye Jeff Parke, possibly...)

There is also some exciting news on the friendly front.

MLS Rumors credits a Seattle source with tipping off an exhibition with Barcelona. And also hosting the MLS Cup.

Exciting times for soccer up here -- can't go wrong with these exciting rumors.

Arsenal accepts Zenit's Arshavin price

It's a miracle. There is progress in the dealings of Andrei Arshavin.

The Gunners have agreed to the Russian clubs asking price. Now only an agreement on the kid's salary is holding up the move.

Who knows how long that mess is going to take...

Mo Edu is hurt

He hasn't been able to crack the Rangers lineup too often and a knee strain won't help.

He probably wasn't encouraged by the strong Kljestan performance either -- one that will likely see Sacha and Michael Bradley as the A-team pairing.

Hopefully luck and form return for the youngster.

FA Cup update

A couple listless performances by the Premiership sides in the 4th round. Here's how things will shake up in the 5th.

No big match-ups yet. Maybe Liverpool and Aston Villa if they get through.

Watford v. Chelsea
West Ham v. Middlesbrough
Sunderland/Blackburn Rovers v. Coventry City
Derby/Nottingham Forest v. Manchester United
Swansea City v. Fulham
Liverpool/Everton v. Doncaster/Aston Villa

Sex on the field?

In short, Dino Drpic is in trouble with his team over having admitted sex with his wife on the club's field.
"Dino had arranged that people should turn on the stadium lights for us and he finally fulfilled his dream of having sex in the middle of a football pitch. It was very naughty," she said.
His club's reaction? He's on the transfer list and will be shipped out soon I imagine.

VIDEO: Kids question Berbatov

Some of those little buggers are damn hard to understand.

Ryan Giggs to get new United contract

Really? Fergie's talking like he can't wait to lock him up for a couple more years.
"He has been fantastic for us this season."

"He could win the Footballer of the Year award and it would be fitting if he did after the career he has had."

"He seems to be getting even better with age and is one of those rare people who find that age and injuries don't catch up with them."
Giggs is 35 years old but it feels like he's been around since the Eisenhower administration. He even hinted at retirement not too long ago.

Maybe it's just an offer as a formality. He's been on all 10 EPL winning teams and owns the club record for appearances.

We'll see, maybe he's still got a couple more moments of magic in those legs...

Canadian soccer mom gone wild

She's also a cop, which makes this even more interesting.

So here's the timeline of this bizarre story, if I understand things correctly one the post I saw over at SbB.
2004: Motorcycle accident prevents lady from working, so she becomes a soccer mom.

2006
: She gets in confrontation with daughter's opponent and then attacks said girl's dad.

2009
: She finally has to take responsibility for her actions and pleads guilty to misconduct charges.
The resolution? Hell if I know. Check back in at in 2011. Blame the Canadian judicial system, I guess...

MLS delays expansion decision

This all according to Ives. We'll know in March he says.

Out: Montreal and Atlanta.

Still in it: Miami, Portland, Vancouver, St. Louis and Ottawa.

Miami -- Barcelona's baby -- is the favorite, but hopefully one of the Northwest teams grabs one. I've got my fingers crossed for Portland.

VIDEO: Beckham scores

Not a free kick. Not a penalty kick. An actual run of play goal.

And a pretty nice one, considering the strike and angle of opportunity.

Of course, with the goal comes more questions about how much Beckham really wants to return to MLS. All parties involved -- besides American soccer -- seem pretty content with the situation in Milan right now.

And he's not saying things to reassure us over here.
"I can't say what will happen," he said. "Even if my contract says that I'll be here until March. We'll have to see.
At we have a contact stipulating his return in a few weeks. Hopefully it holds?

Fredy Montero in?

Pretty much everyone and their mother is reporting that the Sounders FC will sign Fredy Montero soon, so I figured I'd show what he looks like in rave green.

Here's an article at SI saying it's a done deal.

Jose had a nice Q&A with the lad -- nice to see the Spanish-speaking co-worker getting the scoop.

Nothing wrong with blue-chip quality from South America that was linked to La Liga.

Club mourns death of living legend

Tommy Farrer can't get to the grave soon enough for one of his former teams.

The 86 year old was honored by Bishop Auckland FC with a moment of silence. The mistake was noticed when a club official called Farrer's wife to lend support.
A surprised Gladys Farrer said her husband had indeed departed—but only for a few minutes to buy a newspaper and would be back soon if the official wanted to talk to him.
Tommy Farrer said he was more surprised that upset.

Whether jokingly or not, he admitted the story had ran its course and everyone should "let it die".

Pretty cheeky for a dead guy.

500 more days...

Until World Cup glory begins...

Concerns linger over South Africa's preparedness, but until everything's ready, we'll never know.

Spain's gotta remain the favorite, right?

VIDEO: USMNT Kljestan beats Sweden

Dang, Sacha's stock is going up! Whatta performance against the Swedes.

A freakin' hat trick? You got to be joking me.

Here are the highlights with Kljestan's goals at 1:28, 2:55 and 5:40.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Brian Ching, who set up the first goal drawing the foul and the third with excellence control. Well done sir.

But the day belonged to Sacha, who will hopefully be joining Celtic quite soon...

January 23, 2009

Sick day

Some nasty cold has been bugging me for a while. While the day job doesn't quit, I'm gonna have to take a day off from the blog.

Here's the stuff I would've touched on today:

January 22, 2009

VIDEO: Fight!

A pretty decent one too...

Bizarre Jimmy Conrad interview

Want a great example as to why blogs are awesome?

S.F. over at The Offside Rules has this great back-and-forth with the KC/USMNT defender that could only be created outside of mainstream media.

Good times.

Jose M.R. has the Sounders covered

I saw Mr. Romero in the office the other day and he asked if I was going to the Sounders FC first practice.

I said no, and after looking at his coverage, it's clear I didn't need to.

Check out his blog: he's got some some of his own notes and photos, quotes from Sigi, a Q&A with Chris Eylander and even some video.

That guy has it covered. So make sure you check in with him for all things Sounders FC.

Arshavin again?

Story after story kept saying a deal with Arsenal was so close. But, as always, it appears the signing has hit a snag.

Arshavin's agent is calling his former team, Zenit St. Petersburg, "barbaric".

It has gotten so bad that the star from the UEFA Cup and Euro '08 is offering to buy out his own contract.

Good lord, make it stop.

VIDEO: Zlatan knocks Roma out

Another bizarre strike from the Swede, this time for the game-winning goal for Inter in a Copa Italia match with Roma.

That guy is crazy.

A little R-P-S with Pep G.

Scissors!

...

Damn it!

Another Kaka to Real Madrid link

This time from Emerson:
"I've said all along that Madrid have wanted Kaka for the last two years. To be a real top player you have to play for Madrid. If Kaka has the chance to go to Madrid, he shouldn't think twice about it," said Emerson, who spent a season at Madrid before joining Milan in 2007.
Of course that makes things interesting. Should Real Madrid go after Kaka instead of Ronaldo to avoid all the drama?

I would.

And why does everyone think he's going there in the first place? Has he dropped a hint in the locker room?

Greg Berhalter sighting?

Another name I haven't heard in a while. The 1860 Munich defender is apparently mulling a move to Major League Soccer.

The 35 year old is linked most heavily with the Red Bulls. Could be good. I guess.
