Taking a day off

Monday is a busy, busy day for me. A couple stories due for the day job and a big meeting.
Be sure to check out Jozy Altidore's first EPL goal somewhere. That's the biggest news of the weekend.
I'm gonna have to take today off.
Don't hate me. Check out my "Soccer buddies" section for all the stuff you need.

Check out the player celebrate.
Now that's good, fair, light-hearted comedy. Unlike all this JT stuff.
John Terry dropped as England's captain

Inevitable. Here's coach Fabio Capello's statement:
Capello issued the following statement: "After much thought, I have made the decision that it will be best for me to take the captaincy away from John Terry. As a captain with the team, John Terry has displayed extremely positive behaviour. However, I have to take into account other considerations and what is best for all of the England squad. The right move, in my opinion.
"What is best for all of the England team has inspired my choice. John Terry was notified first. When I chose John Terry as captain, I also selected a vice-captain and also named a third choice. There is no reason to change this decision.

Champions League > Super Bowl

Apparently the UCL final last year had more viewers than the Super Bowl.
Damn. That's quite surprising.
Then you think about for a second and it's not that surprising.
VIDEO: Holy fair play
Don't really need to explain this one. Just watch.
It gave me goosebumps the first time I saw it. It's just something you never see in this game.
MLS schedule released!

Check it out kiddos. Not sure who your team is, but the Sounders FC got 10 games on national TV and the league openers again.
Booyah.

Club America needs a break

In case you hadn't heard, the Mexican club had a second player shot. Fortunately, it doesn't appear to be life-threatening, but you have to think they are full in the karma bank right now.
For a Salvador Cabanas update, he could be talking to police soon about the attack and his doctor said he could even by available for the World Cup.
Surprisingly good-to-hear news.
FA Cup -- fifth round
For those interested:Crystal Palace v Aston VillaNot many big boys left...
Manchester City v Stoke
Derby v Birmingham
Bolton v Spurs/Leeds
Chelsea v Cardiff
Fulham v Notts County
Reading v West Brom
Southampton v Portsmouth
Uhhhhh, what?

Apparently there was a John Terry-esque controversy on the USMNT around the 1998 World Cup?
John Harkes? Eric Wynalda?
What?
Hull City 1-1 Chelsea

The Blues dropped a couple points against a sup-par team Tuesday.
Is this the beginning of the end of Chelsea's title run? Never underestimate the power a good scandal can have on a team.
You have to think there are still some good friends of Wayne Bridge in that locker room.
Here are the highlights:

American transfer bits
So long to an MLS original and the league-leader in minutes and assists.
"I was going back and forth on this more than Brett Favre, weighing both sides," Ralston said. "I could have stayed in Boston. I felt like the opportunity to come back and be part of this might not be there next year. I felt like it was something I didn't want to miss. I felt this was the right time and the right place for me."And just so you know, Thierry Henry won't be coming to Major League Soccer this season and Jaime Moreno is back for his 57th season at D.C. United.
The soccer world is fueled by transfer stories.
Sunderland 0, Stoke City 0

This game was worthy of the holy ESPN treatment?
This was the game to go on the big network.
With all the glorious matchups and games these days, we get a scoreless draw between Sunderland and Stoke on cable.
Ugh...

Quick transfers
Not much here, so let's get in and out.- Why not start with a manager? Is Rafa going to Juve?
- Rooney isn't for sale at any price.
- Real Zaragoza signs Edmilson.
- Steve Ralston won't return to New England.
- Philly makes a deal with N.Y. to get Orozco on loan.
Cabanas conscious, talking, eating

Positive news coming out of the Salvador Cabanas story. The Paraguayan is awake and able to talk to his family and doctors.
Club America dedicated their win over the weekend to the forward.
Hopefully the news continues as such.
United humbles Arsenal (EPL roundup)

Nothing like a date with the champs to stop the upstart Gunners in their path. Wayne Rooney, shrugged off being sued, to score his 100th Premiership goal in a 3-1 rout of Arsenal over the weekend.
I didn't catch the 3-D broadcast, did any of you?
Arsenal will having a chance for a big win in not too long by taking on Chelsea next Sunday.
In other action, the Blues stayed atop the table on a game-winning goal by the maligned John Terry. Adebayor had a goal in City's 2-0 win over the bottom-feeding Portsmouth. Everton, Liverpool and Aston Villa also picked up wins.
Here are the results:

VIDEO: Superb Guti assist
This assist is one of the better highlights of the year. It might be the best assist of the season.
I love to see stuff like this.
Egypt pulls off three-peat

That's a heckuva accomplishment, but Egypt winning the African Cup of Nations for the third-straight time will have to be a consolation prize for not making the World Cup.
The Pharaohs didn't look the part of champions for most of the final against Ghana, but substitute Mohamed Gedo scored in the 85th minute on a pretty give-and-go to give his team the 1-0 win Sunday.
That's a record of seven titles for Egypt now.
Definitely glad the U.S. plays Algeria in group play instead. Oh, Nigeria finished third, beating said Algeria 1-0 on Saturday.
FYI, in case you hadn't heard, Togo has remarkably been banned from a couple future tournaments. Ridiculous.
Awkward English love triangle

Weird news came out over the weekend. John Terry has made headlines over allegations that he cheated on his wife with the then-girlfriend of teammate Wayne Bridge.
Yikes.
Terry and Bridge have been teammates at the national and club (Chelsea) level.
There were stories of injunctions, abortions, Team Bridge t-shirts and potential resolution.
I think I'll leave it there. Don't want to dirty my hands with this one.
